Regeneration Gas Fired Heaters

Natural gas flowing from production wells or underground storage sites requires dehydration to protect the distribution system from corrosion and hydrate formation. A regeneration gas fired heater can be used to dry the wet gas and these can often operate at temperatures up to 340 DEG C and pressures up to 1100 Psig.

The Enquiry

Our client designs and builds installations such as subsea equipment, platforms and onshore mega-complexes for the O&G and petrochemical industries.

They required a system on a new site to monitor potential gas leaks on a regeneration gas-fired heater. The area was hazardous and at a potentially high ambient temperature so a monitoring system which required no physical maintenance whilst the plant was running was necessary.

Key Requirements

  • Response time kept to a minimum
  • Remote start up and maintenance of the system when it is use

The Solution

Our GD-A aspirator system monitors gas ingress into areas where it is not practical or safe to position a detector directly. A sample of the target area is drawn through a sample line into the aspirator cabinet where it is then monitored using gas detectors (in this case GD10P point infrared gas detectors).

The specification required that response times were kept to a minimum so the cabinet was installed close to the sample point and within the hazardous area.

The cabinet needed to be remotely operated to enable control room personnel to easily turn the cabinet on and off and also purge the sample lines to remotely clean and maintain the system. In a standard aspirator this maintenance is carried out manually at the cabinet - our solution negated the need for any personnel to enter the hazardous area during operation.

Solenoid ValvesHow It Was Achieved

Using two solenoid valves we were able to remotely control the line purge facility ensuring sample lines remains clear of contaminates. A third solenoid valve was used to control the flow of instrument air which provides the source of the aspirator vacuum - essentially controlling when the system functions and draws a sample from the monitored area.
