GD10P Point Infrared Gas DetectorGroveley Detection has won the contract to supply failsafe infrared gas detectors to Marathon Oil UK Ltd for the Brae Alpha and Brae Bravo oil production platforms in the North Sea.

Groveley are to provide 450 Norwegian-built Simrad GD-10P detectors for the Solstice Project refit of catalytic detectors.

The Simrad unit offers a unique one-second response option, combined with low maintenance costs due to its solid-state infrared sensors that will never need field calibration. The infrared source is silicon-based and lasts up to 60 years.

Groveley has a proven track record for major re-fits, having already supplied over 500 Simrad GD10P detectors for Total Fina Elf¹s Alwyn North platforms earlier in the year.

Groveley¹s managing director Robert Bennet said: "Infra red detectors offer many advantages over catalytic detectors; they cannot be poisoned, they work well in low oxygen environments and with constant exposure to background gases - even exposures to high gas concentrations will not affect service life."

The GD-10P performs self-diagnostic and calibration tests and gives clear warning if a malfunction is detected, without giving a false gas alarm. It has applications in offshore oil and gas platforms, chemical and petrochemical plants, waste disposal, gas turbines and general industry.

Groveley will supply Marathon with 100 units every two weeks between mid-September and early November to meet the planned replacement schedules on each of the platforms.

A special conversion plate and bolts to match existing fixing holes has also been produced to make replacement easier and faster.
