Groveley Refits Gas Detectors On Claymore Oil Platform

Claymore PlatformHazard detection specialists Groveley Detection have completed an order to supply gas detectors for the upgrade of the gas detection systems on the Claymore platform in the North Sea.

The platform operators Talisman Energy (UK) Limited are replacing 180 catalytic sensors with the Simtronics GD10P infrared gas detectors.

Groveley also developed specially designed dual bridge interface units to convert the output from the Simtronics detector to one recognised by the existing gas control cards and to comply with the exact requirements of Talisman. Each detector was supplied with a bracket designed to fit the existing gas detector junction box fixing centres so no drilling was needed - making field installation of the gas detectors much simpler.

The GD10P is a fail-safe infrared point detector which needs no field calibration, just a functional check every two years. The previous catalytic sensors required a full calibration check every 3-6 months. It is not sensitive to vibration or rapid temperature changes and it's silicon-based IR sources have a number of unique features including an expected in-service life of 60 years meaning they do not need to be replaced or recalibrated during their service life - exceeding all current competing technologies which often last as little as two years.

Groveley Detections' managing director Robert Bennet said: "The GD10P is readily interchangeable with catalytic detectors using existing field cabling and a separate bridge interface unit. The GD10P solution is fail-safe as no sinters or hydrophobic filters are used."

The detectors are being fitted throughout the Claymore complex's two fixed steel bridge-linked platforms, the Claymore Production Platform and Claymore Accommodation Platform.
