Groveley Launches Point Detector To Aid Compliance With PM84 Guidance Note

Wednesday 25th February 2004

A novel new infrared point gas detector launched in January by Groveley Detection is five times as sensitive as normal point detectors and comes with a 15 year warrantee on its infrared sources. The GD-10PE is highly stable and has a measuring range of 0 - 20% LEL.

The fail-safe Simrad GD-10PE can be used in ducts and is designed for critical applications needing a fast response to low gas concentration within large volumes of air moving at high velocity, such as the ventilation outlets of gas turbines.

The high sensitivity and short response time of the GD-10PE makes it ideal for aiding compliance with HSE Guidance Note PM84, "Control of Safety Risks at Gas Turbines Used for Power Generation."

The GD-10PE can be used with confidence with alarm levels set as low 3% LEL methane, as recommended in the PM84 Guidance Note.

Its detection concept is based on measurement of infrared radiation passing through a volume of gas. The dual wavelength, dual path concept (which eliminates false gas alarms) and unique IR source have been applied successfully by Simrad Optronics since 1986 in all types of operating conditions ranging from arctic to subtropical temperatures.

The patented, silicon-based IR source has a number of unique features. Its expected in-service life of 60 years means it does not need to be replaced or recalibrated during its service life - so it exceeds all current competing technologies which often have an expected in-service life of only two to four years.

And because it does not employ acoustically-sensitive detector elements, the GD-10PE is not sensitive to vibration or rapid temperature changes.

The GD-10PE is easily interchangeable with catalytic detectors using existing cabling and a separate bridge interface and is an ideal replacement for existing catalytic devices that up to now have been the only alternative in areas with high temperatures.
