Groveley Detection has delivered a further nine flammable gas aspirators and heated duct probes - making in excess of 60 units delivered for use on the Russian Sakhalin II oil and gas project. The aspirators have been utilised on the Lunskoye 'A' and Piltun-Astokhskoye-'B' platforms along side the onshore processing facility.
Groveley has been supplying its GDA gas and smoke detection aspirators to the Sakhalin project for the last three years and they are specially designed to withstand extreme temperatures of -50 to +40ºC.
The aspirators monitor air intakes to the platform and process areas to protect personnel and plant. If any hydrocarbon gas, hydrogen sulphide or smoke is detected, the aspirators send a signal to the main fire and gas control panel which sounds an alarm and closes the air intakes to keep workers safe until the danger is over.
Due to the extreme working environment, Groveley built the units into specially insulated and heated enclosures and fitted the duct sampling probes with heating components to avoid any freezing during sampling within the air intake ducts.
Groveley's managing director Robert Bennet commented; "Our GDA aspirators are generally considered to be the best in the market and because they reduce the number of compression fittings and maintenance is significantly easier - just five minutes instead of the normal two hours to change the key air eductors - which is vital at the temperature range encountered on Sakhalin II."
